On January 28, 1986, the Challenger space shuttle disintegrated 73 seconds after liftoff due to an O-ring failure.  Due to the presence of Christa McAuliffe, who would have been the first schoolteacher in space, the event was highly publicized, the tragedy witnessed by millions of schoolchildren.

President Reagan postponed his State of the Union address until the following week to mark the loss of the astronauts.

The space shuttle program has been ended, but space exploration continues to this day.

I remember reading about this in a science book for kids when I was little... dang, that was tragic.
